This week in class...

Language Arts

In Reading, we have extended our Book Club projects, and students will present their final projects this Tuesday. Then we will begin building background about the causes and effects of migration, which will be a central theme in our next guided reading novel, Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan.

In Language Arts we will be reviewing the Greek and Latin roots we have learned so far and will have a quiz on Friday over the meanings of the roots. Students will be completing a study sheet to use if they need to practice at home.  We will also be learning about using quotation marks or underlining in order to punctuate titles.

Math

The kids have done a great job learning about new ways to solve for the area of familiar shapes. Everyone did an excellent job on our short pop quiz last Friday. This week we will be practicing solving the area of circles and then reviewing three-dimensional shapes. You may want to watch the video above if you are having trouble remembering each type of 3D figure. We will have a challenging activity Tuesday and Thursday involving making nets for an unusual object.

Homework:
Monday: One Xtramath.org lesson, Math IXL EE.2 and EE.5
Tuesday: One Xtramath.org lesson, Math IXL DD.1 and DD.2
Wednesday: Relax!
Thursday: One Xtramath.org lesson, Math IXL DD.5
Friday: Relax!

Science

This week we'll be investigating the planets in our solar system and the earth's place within it, as well as the distances between them.  We'll also be inquiring about the differences in gravity on different planets.

Have a great week, and thank you for your support!

In Language Arts and Writing will be analyzing two different songs and identifying the elements of poetry we find in each one, as well as interpreting themes and points of view after an in-depth analysis.

Math

We will continue our unit on geometry this week with a review of perimeter and area of rectangles and squares. We will then learn about how to measure the area of parallelograms, triangles, and circles. Our homework will review several topics about geometry.

Homework:
Monday: One Xtramath.org lesson, Math IXL BB.9 (you may need to review the first video), Watch the MathAntics video on Area
Tuesday: One Xtramath.org lesson, Math IXL CC.4
Wednesday: One Xtramath.org lesson, Math IXL CC.3
Thursday: One Xtramath.org lesson, Math IXL CC.1 and CC.2

Science
Because of unforeseen circumstances, we were unable to create our sundials last week, and we instead created a "Universe in a Box" to help us visualize what the positions of the constellations can tell us about the seasons. This week we WILL be investigating the earth's rotation and the sun's position in the sky by making our own sundials! We will also be investigating the different phases of the moon and using a model to demonstrate the process.

Have a great week, and thank you for your support!

Notes for the week...

** This Friday, April 12, we will be celebrating Semana Santa with a special potluck lunch at 12:00 and water activities in the afternoon, as explained in an email that went home last week.  If you have not been able to sign up for something to contribute, please click HERE to access the document to sign up! Students will also need to be sure to bring clothes that can get wet, and students may bring toys such as squirt guns and water balloons.  We are asking that students bring their own reusable plates, cups, and utensils rather than using disposable plasticware, so that we can put into practice all we have been learning about protecting the earth and its resources this year!

** Third quarter report cards were sent home over two weeks ago.  Please sign and return the envelope to school as soon as possible.  Thanks!

**Just a reminder that next week, from April 15th to 19th, and also Monday, April 22nd there are no classes.
