Notes for the week...

**  Thank you so much for your support of our 3rd annual Support Staff Appreciation Breakfast!  Students worked so hard serving those who serve us throughout the year, and they realized how exhausting, yet rewarding, it is to serve others!  It was a great success, and everyone who attended expressed their most heartfelt thanks! ** 
Our "Goodbye to Elementary" end-of-the-year party will be held at the swimming pool at Quinta Bella on Thursday, May 30.  Permission slips were sent home yesterday, along with a note asking for 200 lps for each child.  This will cover the cost of lunch, snacks, transportation, drinks, and desserts!  Mr. Andrew and Ms. Amy will do the shopping so you don't have to :).  We will be leaving school at 9:45am (students WILL HAVE their first two classes of the day) and will return to school before dismissal.




This week in class...

Language Arts
In Reading, we will finish with our guided reading novel, Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan, and have our final discussion and reflection over the book.  

In Writing, we will be working on writing letters to the fourth graders, describing what they can expect in fifth grade.


Math

This week in Math class we will finish up learning about finding the volume of prisms and cylinders. We will have a short quiz to review these topics on Friday.

Notes for the week...

**  This week we will hold our APPRECIATION BREAKFAST for our cleaning, maintenance, bus, and security staff on Thursday, May 23.  Students will be contributing food, decorating, making small gifts, and serving breakfast to the wonderful people that serve us all year long! We will begin setting up at 8:00am and start serving food at 9:00am.

Click HERE to sign up for something to contribute.  We need every family's help to make this a special meal for such deserving, hard-working people!

** Also, this week we will have our SPRING CONCERT on Friday, May 24 at 10:15 a.m. where our students will showcase their advances in Music Class. We hope to see you all there! We will have an EARLY DISMISSAL following the concert which should end at 11:45 a.m.

** Our "Goodbye to Elementary" end-of-the-year party will be held at the swimming pool at Quinta Bella on Thursday, May 30.  We will ask each family to contribute to the cost of the pool, transportation, and food once we have crunched all the numbers, so please stay tuned to your email and whatsapp for more information to come!


This week in class...

Language Arts
In Reading, we will continue with our guided reading novel, Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan, and analyzing the characters, themes, and main events in the story.

In Language Arts, we will be studying the Greek and Latin roots -ful/-ous, phon, lum, sub, poly with a quiz on Friday. We will also begin composing letters to the fourth graders about what to expect in fifth grade next year!


Math


Last week we studied how to find the volume of rectangular prisms and cubes. This week we will practice finding the volume of triangular prisms and cylinders. Students, please double-check that you are up-to-date on your past math IXLs. This week's practices will help review a variety of topics we have covered over the course of the year.

** MAP TESTING CONTINUES THIS WEEK Fifth graders are scheduled to take their tests according to the schedule below:
       
       READING - Monday, May 13, 8:30-9:45
       LANGUAGE - Wednesday, May 15, 8:30-9:45

** Parents please mark your calendars for 10:15 a.m. on Friday, May 24. Because of the great success last year, we are once again turning our Discovery Idol into a SPRING CONCERT where our students will showcase their advances in Music Class. We hope to see you all there!


This week in class...

Language Arts

In Reading, we will continue with our new guided reading novel, Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan, and analyzing the characters, themes, and main events in the story.

In Language Arts, we will be learning about the difference between firsthand and secondhand accounts of events, and analyzing examples in history.


Math


Last week we worked on a project to develop nets to create boxes for shipping objects in the classroom. This week we will learn how to solve the volume of common geometric shapes and their surface area. Be sure you have watched the MathAntics video to prepare for our activities this week. Last week most students were able to complete the Math IXLs for the week, but if you have not yet, please finish them this week.

** MAP TESTING BEGINS this Tuesday, May 7.  Fifth graders are scheduled to take their tests according to the schedule below:
        
       MATH - Tuesday, May 7, 1:15-2:45

       LANGUAGE - Wednesday, May 15, 8:30-9:45


**  BAKE SALE  -  Wednesday the 3rd graders will have a bake sale for their economics unit. Please help support their learning by buying a tasty treat! :)

** SPRING GENERAL ASSEMBLY - The summons for the Spring General Assembly will take place at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 11. A quorum for this assembly is needed for the approval of the 2019-2020 School Budget. Please mark your calendar and support the Board of Directors and the school by attending this assembly and voting for the important matters that will be presented then.

This week in class...

Language Arts
In Reading, we will continue with our new guided reading novel, Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan, and analyzing the characters, themes, and main events in the story.

In Language Arts we will continue learning more Greek and Latin roots: geo, graph, meter, hydro/aqua, ology.  We'll also be learning about all of the different prefixes that can be used to mean "not" or "opposite of" including non, im, in, dis, and un.  In addition, we'll be investigating some common idioms and figures of speech.


Math




This will be our last week studying geometric figures. This week we will have an introductory unit on how to solve the volume of three-dimensional figures. Please be sure to watch the MathAntics video above to prepare for this lesson and also watch the first video if you need to review the aspects of three-dimensional figures, including vertices, edges, and faces.
