Notes for the week...

** COMING SOON: Fourth and fifth graders will be organizing a special appreciation breakfast for our cleaning, maintenance, bus, and security staff to be held on Thursday, May 23.  Students will be contributing food, decorating, making small gifts, and serving breakfast to the wonderful people that serve us all year long!  Please keep an eye out for more information coming soon!

** MAP TESTING BEGINS this Tuesday, May 7.  Fifth graders are scheduled to take their tests according to the schedule below:
        
       MATH - Tuesday, May 7, 1:15-2:45
       READING - Monday, May 13, 8:30-9:45
       LANGUAGE - Wednesday, May 15, 8:30-9:45


**  BAKE SALE  -  Wednesday the 3rd graders will have a bake sale for their economics unit. Please help support their learning by buying a tasty treat! :)

** SPRING GENERAL ASSEMBLY - The summons for the Spring General Assembly will take place at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 11. A quorum for this assembly is needed for the approval of the 2019-2020 School Budget. Please mark your calendar and support the Board of Directors and the school by attending this assembly and voting for the important matters that will be presented then. 

** Parents please mark your calendars for 10:15 a.m. on Friday, May 24. Because of the great success last year, we are once again turning our Discovery Idol into a SPRING CONCERT where our students will showcase their advances in Music Class. We hope to see you all there!


This week in class...

Language Arts
In Reading, we will continue with our new guided reading novel, Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan, and analyzing the characters, themes, and main events in the story.

In Language Arts we will continue learning more Greek and Latin roots: geo, graph, meter, hydro/aqua, ology.  We'll also be learning about all of the different prefixes that can be used to mean "not" or "opposite of" including non, im, in, dis, and un.  In addition, we'll be investigating some common idioms and figures of speech.


Math




This will be our last week studying geometric figures. This week we will have an introductory unit on how to solve the volume of three-dimensional figures. Please be sure to watch the MathAntics video above to prepare for this lesson and also watch the first video if you need to review the aspects of three-dimensional figures, including vertices, edges, and faces.

Science

This week we'll be spending more time investigating the similarities, differences, and important characteristics of different planets.  We will only have 1 Science session this week due to MAP testing.
